President's Letter - August 2020

Dear Members,

It certainly has been a challenging year.  The pandemic has created a lot of stress and issues, some of which we have never had to deal with before.  Let’s face it, in some respects, we were ill-prepared, and yet healthcare workers including pharmacy staff rose to the occasion to treat those in need.  PSHP also rose to the occasion by reaching out to local, state and federal agencies, departments, and organizations and worked to coordinate efforts, consolidate and distribute information and medications, provided networking opportunities, sponsored numerous and regularly scheduled calls with Clinical Specialists and Directors of Pharmacy.  We learned a lot along the way, and while for many of us this was our first experience with a major pandemic, it certainly won’t be the last as many experts will tell us.  Therefore it is so important that we reflect on what went well and what did not go so well, and how we can do better next time.  Our upcoming 2020 “Emergency Preparedness Management Summit” will do just that!  The meeting will be held from 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM EST on September 11, 2020. The full lineup of topics and speakers can be found HERE. This will be a virtual event; however, there will be opportunities to interact and ask questions of the speakers.  There are group discount rates as well which can be viewed online.  I sincerely hope you will consider joining us.

We have also been busy planning for our 2020 Annual Assembly which will be held virtually from November 4th - 6th.  We will have tracts for Leadership, Pharmacy Practice, Students, and Technicians to allow for a diverse opportunity for everyone on the Pharmacy Team the opportunity to grow their knowledge and skills. We will incorporate an Exhibitor Showcase and various networking opportunities.  You can receive up to 19 continuing education credits.  The full agenda can be viewed HERE.

While dealing with the pandemic has been a major focus, it certainly has not been the only focus at PSHP.  Our committees and board members have been actively engaged in legislative issues including working with PPA on revisions to the pharmacy practice act dealing with collaborative practice agreements as well as working on the pharmacy technician bill to advance technician practice in our state.  We have also been active in involving students in our organization and in working on social media networks and other opportunities to increase our visibility and involvement with members.

We have also expanded our CE offering capabilities to now include those “specialty” CE credits as carve-outs that are required for our pharmacist license renewal.  Opportunities are now available for opioid/pain/addiction, immunization, and patient safety continuing education credits.

We certainly have a lot of exciting activities and opportunities for involvement, but we need your help in various ways.  If you have not done so, please be sure to renew your membership.  Also, please pass our newsletter along to your fellow staff and encourage them to join us in shaping the future of pharmacy practice in Pennsylvania.  There are many committees and task forces that could use your help as well.  As a part of the Annual Assembly, we will begin our strategic planning process, and we would also like your input to help guide our organization.

Please stay safe and healthy, and be sure to join us for our upcoming Emergency Preparedness Summit and 52nd Annual Assembly!
