The Northwestern Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists (NWPSHP) held its annual spring continuing education (CE) day on Saturday, 5/16/2020. A total of 3.25 accreditation council for pharmacy education CE credits were offered. The CEs were offered virtually in order to prioritize the safety of all participants. Attendees included both pharmacist and pharmacy technician representatives from multiple health systems within the region. The first CE presented was titled “Pharmacotherapeutic Considerations in End of Life Care” by Dr. Ashley King, PharmD, BCGP. Dr. King completed a PGY-2 pharmacy residency in geriatrics and has worked in the skilled nursing and home health and hospice setting for approximately 5 years with LECOM Health. The CE discussed structural components of hospice care, starting medications to treat end of life conditions, and deprescribing medications. The second CE was titled “Direct Oral Anticoagulants: Novel Uses and Reversal” by Dr. Travis Grey, PharmD. Dr. Grey completed a PGY-2 pharmacy residency in critical care and currently practices as a clinical pharmacy specialist in heart failure at Saint Vincent Hospital. The CE reviewed direct oral anticoagulant indications and reversal options with extensive overview of supporting clinical trials. The last 4 CEs were presented by local PGY-1 pharmacy residents and included presentations on “Optimizations of Beta-Lactam Dosing with Extended Infusion” by Dr. Chelsea Weselak, PharmD,  “2019 Update to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Guidelines” by Dr. Molly Bacon, PharmD, “An Update on E-cigarette and Vaping Associated Lung Injury” by Dr. Richard Jones, PharmD, and “Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Guideline Updates” by Dr. Joseph Welch, PharmD. These presentations gave a detailed overview of the most recent clinical trials and guidelines related to each topic. Attendees provided positive feedback related to the quality of content and the applicability to current practice. The program was primarily organized by Angela Shick, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP, current president of the chapter. NWPSHP looks forward to its next CE day in the Fall of this year.
