The Southeastern Chapter had the privilege of hosting a patient safety CE program presented by Matthew Grissinger, RPh, FISMP, FASCP on the hot topic of drug shortages at UPMC Pinnacle Community Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg.   The thought provoking program generated much discussion about current implications of the unavailability of common medications utilized in the hospital setting.  From natural disasters to a halt of production in response to FDA enforcement, there are a multitude of factors that may cause a manufacturer to be unable to supply certain drugs.

Drug shortages can cause delays in treatment and medication errors.  It is imperative to develop a plan of action during these vulnerable times and dedicate an appropriate team that can assess ways to prevent errors from occurring and recommend alternatives.  Communication is an important first step, and reporting errors related to drug shortages is vital to mitigate future risks.

Special thanks to Matthew Grissinger for sharing and promoting patient safety initiatives!
