ASHP Resources & Leadership on Workforce Burnout, Well-being, and Resilience

Greetings and I hope your 2020 is off to a healthy start! ASHP joined the NAM Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience as a formal sponsor in June 2017. Since then, ASHP is contributing to the Action Collaborative while developing and advancing member resources for pharmacists, pharmacy residents, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians.  While a majority of health-system pharmacists feel job-induced stress, most are satisfied with their jobs and working at their fullest potential, according to the findings of an ASHP member survey on well-being and resilience in the workforce; yet, we recognize that there are times when an individual or a team may need support from peers or supervisors.

Resources available from ASHP for you & your team:

  • Create foundational awareness and level-set the conversation on the issue of burnout, well-being, and resilience. View the ASHP Well-Being and Resilience online series for topics ranging from mindfulness and meditation to leadership strategies.
  • Consider this "to do" list as a template for team or organizational (PSHP) involvement in the journey to promote a resilient and thriving pharmacy workforce.

Finally, join this movement and commit to improving well-being and reducing burnout by taking the ASHP Well-Being pledge and by sharing your well-being story. Burnout is mostly a local problem and requires local and authentic leadership. Start a genuine conversation on burnout in the workplace and then take meaningful steps to address it. There are tools available to do this in a thoughtful and constructive manner with frameworks that outline steps starting with initiating the discussion and finishing with plans for evaluating and measuring progress. For those pharmacists, residents, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians experiencing overt burnout with severe impairment, we urge them to seek support immediately through employee/student assistance programs or professional care. Be well in 2020 and beyond.
