Dear Pharmacy Colleagues:

The New Year offers fresh beginnings, excitement and a surge of energy into projects! It is a great time to reflect on our profession, while evaluating both the opportunities and responsibilities within.

The Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists is dedicated to advancing patient care by promoting excellence in health-system pharmacy practice. Our organization is focused on Caring, Collaborating, Educating and Advocating. Strategically, PSHP advances these goals through committees and task forces and the work of awesome members, like you! With the support of our new executive director, our rate of growth and change is exponential.

If furthering your involvement in PSHP is on your mind this year, please consider the following:

The Legislative Committee is always abuzz, with a focus on our professional advancement and patient safety. Because of their robust activity level, there will be a separate monthly newsletter from this committee. Additionally, a task force focused solely on Pharmacy Benefit Managers has been convened to be certain the perspectives from a wide range of health system activities are evaluated and represented. While we ensure good defensive strategies to well-intentioned legislation that could inadvertently cause patient harm, the PSHP Board and busy committee members are focused on practice advancement.

The PSHP Ambulatory Care Task Force is focused on helping others outside of the profession understand how pharmacists impact patient care outcomes through pharmacist collaboration and integration. Please consider attending the PSHP Ambulatory Care Summit on May 1, 2020 at Hershey Country Club, and bring along decision makers and physician partners to help move the pharmacy ambulatory practice forward in Pennsylvania.

PSHP has several other new, exciting initiatives and committees, including the Medication Safety and Pharmacy Technicians Committee. Please consider getting involved as we work creatively in our focused efforts to promote collaboration, education and advocacy in these respective areas. If you have an interest in participating, please feel free to email us at and

Additionally, the Public Relations Committee and Membership Committee are eager to get other people excited and informed, while the Finance Committee plays a central role in ensuring our organization’s long-term viability.

Perhaps it’s the Programming Committee you’d like to consider. This Committee is dedicated to planning the PSHP Annual assembly, which will be hosted this year in Pittsburgh on November 5th and 6th. The speaker line up is coming together, and there is room for you to submit exciting presentation ideas. The team is focused on networking opportunities and idea sharing sessions.

New Practitioners’ Network and Student Societies deserves everyone’s attention, as it is critical for our profession to engage and empower students and new practitioners. Considering how much support you provide to them in our own institution, please think about sharing those ideas and strategies on a broader scale.

Only 23% of people follow through on their New Years’ resolutions. Please consider PSHP’s committees and task forces as opportunities to contribute towards your personal advancement, the advancement of others and the profession of pharmacy.

PSHP’s Board and Committees are energized and looking forward to an exciting year!
