On September 17, 2019, the Delaware Valley Society of Health-System Pharmacists held a continuing education (CE) event at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Center City, Philadelphia. The event featured two lectures, and had an estimated attendance of 63 pharmacists, technicians, and students.

The first lecture titled, The Importance of B Cells in the Pathogenesis of MS, was presented by Olga Thon, MD, the Director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroinflammation Center at the Drexel Neurosciences Institute, Assistant Professor of Neurology at Drexel University College of Medicine, and Associate Program Director of the Neurology Residency Program. The presentation began with an overview of the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis, with emphasis on the critical role of B Cells. Medication options for the treatment of multiple sclerosis were then discussed, with an emphasis on specific monoclonal antibodies such as ocrelizumab and natalizumab.

The second lecture titled, It’s A Sticky Situation: Management of Acute Pain in Patients on Buprenorphine for Medication-Assisted Therapy, was a CE talk, presented Tanya J. Uritsky, PharmD, BCPS, CPE, a pain and palliative care pharmacist at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Uritsky began with a discussion on the pharmacokinetic properties of buprenorphine, that allow it to be used as an effective treatment for both pain and substance use disorder. She then mentioned the differences between how buprenorphine is used for pain compared to substance use disorder, and reviewed recommendations on how buprenorphine should be used for the treatment of acute pain.

The event was a success, and the audience gained valuable insight on the topics presented. The event also served as a great networking opportunity for members of the Delaware Valley Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
