Hope everyone had a wonderful summer. On Wednesday, September 11th, MEPSHP held its first dinner/CE meeting of the Fall at Edge Restaurant in Bethlehem, PA. We started with a promotional presentation on endometriosis sponsored by AbbVie, Inc. Dr. Gerald Harkins, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, gave a talk entitled Reassessing Endometriosis: Managing Unresolved Pain. We learned how endometriosis is a life long disease, although birth control and surgery can help alleviate the pain of endometriosis. We also learned that about 10% of women have endometriosis, and that these women all experience it differently and have different responses to treatment.

Our educational presentation was provided by Dr. Melissa Potts, Clinical Associate Professor at Temple University School of Pharmacy. Dr. Potts gave a lecture entitled The CGRP Receptor Antagonists for the Prevention of Migraine Headache. We learned about the various therapies that are available for the prevention of migraines. Dr. Potts also discussed the mechanism, efficacy and safety profile of the various CGRP Receptor Antagonists, including Ajovy (fremanezumab), Aimovig (erenumab) and Emgality (galcanezumab). She also presented us with a patient case in order to determine the most appropriate therapeutic option for the patient.

We learned a lot from both of the discussions on endometriosis and migraines. Both of these types of patient’s experience invisible pain that unfortunately has no cure. However, we help use therapeutic options to help alleviate that patient’s pain, and help improve their quality of life.

Our next MEPSHP meeting will be held at Melt on Thursday, October 17th.  The next talk will be on myelofibrosis sponsored by Incyte Corporation. Stay tuned for the announcement within the next couple of weeks.
