On Tuesday, September 18th, 2018, the Delaware Valley Society of Health-System Pharmacists (DVSHP) chapter of PSHP held a CE event over dinner at the Hotel Sofitel in Center City, Philadelphia. Over 75 members and non-members of PSHP including pharmacists, technicians, and students took the opportunity to attend the event. The CE dinner offered two lectures by experts of their respective fields.

The evening started with a lecture by Melissa White, PharmD, a PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Resident at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania. During her presentation, Dr. White briefly went over the mechanisms of resistance for gram negative bacteria and described the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of agents available for treatment of carbapenem- resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections. She then delved into the epidemiology and the clinical impacts of CRE. By the end of the lecture, the attendees had a better understanding about factors to take into consideration when designing an optimal antibiotic regimen for the treatment of CRE infections.

Patrick Medina, PharmD, BCOP, a professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and Director of Pharmacy Services at the Stephenson Cancer Center, presented a lecture focused on the role of a pharmacist in managing immune-related adverse effects associated with immuno-oncology therapies. The unique immunotherapy related adverse events require prompt management and proactive pharmacy intervention.

Overall, the event was successful, and the members of the audience were thoroughly engaged. The attendees left the event more informed about these new ongoing issues and with a better understanding on how to manage them in practical settings.
