The Jefferson College of Pharmacy (TJUH) recently celebrated the career of Dr. Gerald Meyer, who retired at the end of June after spending 43 years at Jefferson. More than 100 of Dr. Meyer’s colleagues and former residents and students traveled from near and far to attend a reception held in his honor on June 19, 2018. During this reception, Dr. Meyer took us on a “road down memory lane” as he shared that his first job offer letter from the Department of Pharmacy at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) stated that there were “many projects to be done.” As he reflected on his lifelong career at Jefferson, Dr. Meyer shared that even after all these years with TJUH and JCP, that there are still “many projects and work to be done” in the pharmacy profession.

Dr. Meyer came to Jefferson in 1975 after obtaining his BS and PharmD from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and completing a Residency in Hospital Pharmacy at Rhode Island Hospital. After serving as a Supervisor in the Department of Pharmacy, Dr. Meyer was promoted to Assistant Director with responsibility for directing the operations of the Department. During his 30-year tenure as Assistant Director, the Department of Pharmacy experienced tremendous growth both in size and in services provided and became one of the premier pharmacy departments in the Northeast. Dr. Meyer also coordinated/directed Jefferson’s pharmacy residency programs for more than 35 years; overseeing the training of more than 230 residents. Jefferson’s residency program and residency preceptors received several prestigious awards of excellence during his leadership. In 2007, Dr. Meyer joined JCP as one of its founding faculty members and assumed the role of Director of Experiential Education. Over the past 11 years, Gerry recruited an outstanding Experiential Education team and led this team and JCP in the development and implementation of the experiential education component of JCP’s curriculum. He and his team worked very carefully to recruit the numerous sites and preceptors used in the delivery of the JCP’s Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences.

Throughout his career, Dr. Meyer has been actively engaged in advancing the profession of pharmacy. He consistently contributed to numerous local, regional, and national pharmacy activities and organizations. Gerry is a past-president of the Delaware Valley Society of Health-System Pharmacists (DVSHP), the Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists (PSHP), and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). He is a three-time Past Chair of the ASHP House of Delegates. Since 1982, he has served on the Advisory Committee for the Eastern States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors and previously served as Chair of that Conference. Gerry has received numerous awards in recognition of his contributions and leadership, including the Sr. Gonzalez Award (PSHP), the Jonathan Roberts Award (DVSHP); JCP’s Extraordinary Leadership Award; and the Annual Alumnus Award from his alma mater.
Jefferson is going to greatly miss Dr. Meyer! We wish him all the best as he starts his new journey in life.
