A Night of Industry and Student CE’s

by. Kayla Askey, Rachel Hatch, and Darshan Patel
On April 17th, pharmacists, technicians, and students alike gathered for the Delaware Valley Society of Health-System Pharmacists (DVSHP) Night with Industry & Student CE Presentation Night. This event is hosted annually and is organized by the DVSHP student workgroup with the support of DVSHP and fellow industry partners. Each year one group of students from each school, Jefferson College of Pharmacy, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, and Temple School of Pharmacy are selected to create and deliver a CE Presentation. This year the topics covered were the issues of polypharmacy, biosimilars, and reversal of anticoagulant therapies.

The night began with attendees engaging with industry partners. A bingo game with the names of the industry partners was used to encourage engagement between the various industry partners and the pharmacist and students in attendance. At the conclusion of the event, one lucky winner was awarded a prize for the most networking that evening. We would like to thank the industry partners that attended.

After a fun time of networking, the crowd moved into the ballroom for dinner. Following dinner, DVSHP President Dr. Raymond Lamore opened the Presentation Night, hosted by emcee Kayla Askey. The night featured presentations by students from all three Philadelphia schools and colleges of pharmacy. First was Brooke Barlow from the Jefferson College of Pharmacy, presenting “When Less is More: The Role of Pharmacists and Technicians in Reducing Polypharmacy in Older Adults”. Her presentation informed the audience about multiple tools that could be implemented in practice to help diminish polypharmacy. Next, Jessica Fraone and Vidhi Ghandi from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy presented “The Rise of Biosimilar Agents”. Fraone and Ghandi discussed the history of biosimilars and their use and relevance to clinical practice. Finally, Veronika Colomy and Kristin Feick from Temple University’s School of Pharmacy presented “New Guidance in Reversal Strategies, and Re-Initiation Considerations for Oral Anticoagulant Therapy”. They provided an informative talk on oral anticoagulants and when to restart these agents after bleeding. Overall, the night was full of networking and learning and all of the 92 members in attendance left with new knowledge.
