The Delaware Valley Society of Health System Pharmacists (DVSHP) created the Anthony Sorrentino Memorial Commencement Award six years ago in order to acknowledge students in their fourth professional year, who have made sustained contributions to health system pharmacy. The purpose of the award is to recognize individuals who have shown themselves as leaders academically and professionally, and have contributed to the mission of the Delaware Valley Society of Health System Pharmacists.

The Legacy of Anthony Sorrentino

Anthony Sorrentino (Tony) was a well-known and highly respected pharmacist with a broad and distinguished career. He was the Director of Pharmacy at Presbyterian Medical Center, Assistant Director for Outpatient Pharmacy Services, and Manager of the Jefferson Apothecary. Since 1971, he taught at the University of the Sciences, joined the faulty full time in 1996, and eventually retired in 2009. Tony was an educator, a mentor, and a friend to many pharmacists throughout the Delaware Valley. His impact on the profession is his legacy, and it will continue for years to come.

When the award was created, Tony was deeply honored and humbled that such an honor was created in his namesake. With Tony's passing, the award has taken on new meaning and significance, and is awarded annually.

2018 Anthony Sorrentino Memorial Commencement Award Recipient:

Kayla Garzio

Dr. Garzio, a 2018 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP), has been a member of DVSHP since 2015.  She has served on ASHP's Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee, was the SSHP’s Student Society of Health System Pharmacy Class of 2018 Representative, served as Vice President of the University of the Sciences Honors Student Association, is a member of Rho Chi, and is a member of Phi Lamda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society. Kayla has worked as a Pharmacy Intern at Lehigh Valley Hospital- Cedar Crest since 2013, completed the Veterans Affair Learning Opportunities Residency (VALOR) over the summer of 2016, was a Summer Intern at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2015, and worked at DeBalko’s Standard Drug Store from 2011-2014.  She also worked at the University of the Sciences as a Student Worker, Service Attendant, and Student Ambassador.  Kayla recently received third place at the DVSHP Student Poster Night and has participated in numerous initiatives as a DVSHP student work group representative. She most certainly meets the award criteria that serves to recognize those who have made sustained contributions to health system pharmacy, who have shown themselves as leaders academically and professionally, and have contributed to the mission of the Delaware Valley Society of Health System Pharmacists.

For the future, Kayla will begin her residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital this summer.
