A Call to Action from ASHP Government Relations Division

Colleagues,

ASHP and our partners in the Patient Access to Pharmacists Care Coalition (PAPCC) are pushing to have provider status legislation, the Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement  Act (H.R. 592), included in an upcoming hearing of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee.

The hearing will explore ways to address the opioid epidemic and presents an opportunity to highlight provider recognition of pharmacists as a policy option to curb the misuse and abuse of opioids. A favorable hearing could result in H.R. 592 being included in upcoming Medicare legislation focused on this critical issue.

Please add your voice to our efforts. Contact your representative today and ask them to request that H.R. 592 is included in the upcoming hearing.

Here's what you can do:

  1. Send an email to your representative. ASHP has provided a template that outlines the roles that pharmacists play in appropriate pain management. Please personalize it with examples of the strategies you employ to help prevent opioid abuse and misuse.
  2. Ask colleagues at your practice site to join you. Every voice counts!
  3. Brief your organization's administration and Government Relations staff on the issue.
